Nutrition Doesn't Begin in the Body, It Begins in the Food System.

When we think about nutrition, we often think about the individual. As a nutritionist, I design nutrition plans tailored to the individual. Nutrition has become increasingly personalised, and in so many ways, this is a positive shift. Food, and our relationship with it, is deeply personal.

However while these things matter, over time I’ve come to believe that nutrition begins much earlier than the point of dietary advice or individual behaviour.

It begins in the food system.

This understanding didn’t emerge from theory alone. It emerged gradually through my work as a nutritionist, and through my experience running a community food hub.

Working in clinical nutrition, I saw firsthand how deeply food can influence health and wellbeing. I worked with individuals navigating digestive issues, hormonal concerns, fatigue, chronic disease and the everyday challenge of nourishing themselves in a busy and often stressful world. Like many practitioners, I was trained to focus primarily on the individual, their symptoms, dietary intake, lifestyle and health goals.

But over time, I began noticing the broader forces shaping these outcomes.

Food affordability.
Access.
Time poverty.
The availability and marketing of ultra-processed foods.
Disconnection from seasonal eating.
Loss of food knowledge and food culture.
Environmental pressures affecting agriculture and supply chains.

I began to see that many health challenges do not exist in isolation from the systems that produce, distribute and shape our food environment.

At the same time, running a community food hub gave me a completely different lens into food and health.

Suddenly, food became visible in a new way.

I found myself learning about weather events affecting crops, rising input costs for farmers, supply chain disruptions, food waste, seasonal variability and the enormous amount of labour required simply to get fresh food from the farm to the community. I witnessed how local food systems foster connection, resilience and a greater awareness of where food comes from, something increasingly absent from modern life.

I also saw how deeply people long for this reconnection.

Not just with healthier food, but with something more meaningful: seasonality, locality, community, transparency and trust.

Increasingly, research is beginning to reflect this broader understanding of health. We are learning more about the importance of dietary diversity, the microbiome, biodiversity, soil health and the relationship between ecological health and human wellbeing. Public health conversations are also shifting toward concepts such as food security, nutrition security and sustainable food systems.

The more I explore these ideas, the more interconnected they appear.

Healthy soil influences the nutrient density and resilience of crops. Diverse ecosystems support biodiversity both above and below the ground. Diverse diets support a healthier gut microbiome. Local food systems can strengthen community resilience and food access. Environmental degradation ultimately affects human health outcomes.

None of these issues exist independently of one another.

This has gradually shifted the way I think about nutrition itself.

Nutrition is not simply the study of nutrients or dietary patterns. It is also about relationships, between people and food, between communities and land, between health and ecology, between individual wellbeing and collective systems.

This doesn’t mean individual nutrition advice no longer matters. It absolutely does. Personalised, evidence-based care can be life changing. But increasingly, I believe we also need to widen the lens through which we view health and nourishment.

Because healthy choices do not occur in a vacuum. They are shaped by the systems around us.

At the heart of my work is a simple belief: healthy people and healthy ecosystems cannot be separated.

I don’t claim to have all the answers in this space. In many ways, I am still learning, observing and connecting the dots. But I am increasingly interested in the intersection between nutrition, food systems, sustainability, public health and community resilience, and the role each of these plays in creating a healthier future.

Perhaps nutrition doesn’t begin in the body after all.

Perhaps it begins much earlier, in the soil, the seed, the farmer, the ecosystem, the marketplace, the community and the systems that shape what food becomes available to us in the first place.

And perhaps part of improving health means learning to see those connections more clearly.
